Bissula is a place for stories, ideas, history, imagination, and the freedom to look at life a little differently.
Some of our stories are rooted in history. Some explore women’s rights and the long struggle for freedom and independence. Some follow the imagined history of the Bissula family and the generations that came after it. Others step completely beyond the boundaries of ordinary reality and enter the worlds of imagination and fantasy.
And that’s intentional.
We believe stories do not always have to fit neatly into one category. History can inspire imagination. Imagination can help us see history differently. Fantasy can explore ideas that ordinary life sometimes makes difficult to express. And a fictional story can sometimes raise very real questions about freedom, courage, identity, relationships, and the choices we make.
Women, Freedom and Independence
At the heart of Bissula is an interest in women and their place in the world.
Women’s rights did not suddenly appear. They have been shaped by generations of women who challenged expectations, questioned authority, demanded independence, and refused to accept that their lives had to be defined by someone else.
Bissula explores those struggles through history, commentary, storytelling, and imagination.
We are interested not only in what women have experienced, but in what women might choose when they are given the freedom to determine their own lives.
The Bissula Family
The Bissula family stories are an important part of the world we are creating.
They draw inspiration from history while allowing imagination to take the story somewhere history alone cannot go. Characters, relationships, conflicts, traditions, victories, losses, and entire generations can develop beyond the limitations of the historical record.
The result is not intended to be presented as conventional history.
It is a story world—one that allows us to explore what might have happened, what could have happened, and what we wish had happened.
History and Imagination
Bissula does not believe that imagination diminishes history.
Sometimes imagination gives us another way to understand it.
A historical subject may lead to a fictional story. A fictional character may raise a very real question. An imagined society may allow us to examine freedom, equality, sexuality, family, power, or independence in ways that a strictly historical account cannot.
We will sometimes clearly identify historical material, fictional storytelling, and fantasy. Readers should never have to wonder whether we are presenting imagination as established fact.
But we also don’t want the boundary between reality and imagination to prevent us from telling an interesting story.
Freedom to Imagine
Freedom is one of the central ideas behind Bissula.
Freedom to think.
Freedom to question.
Freedom to imagine.
Freedom to create.
Freedom to decide what kind of life we want to live.
That doesn’t mean every story represents a belief or lifestyle that every reader will share. It means we believe there is value in exploring ideas rather than automatically rejecting them.
Some stories may challenge conventional thinking. Others may simply entertain. Some may be serious, while others may be playful, provocative, romantic, adventurous, or fantastical.
There is room for all of them.
Is Life Real or Imaginary?
Perhaps that is the question behind everything we do.
We spend our lives separating reality from imagination, fact from fiction, history from legend, and possibility from impossibility.
But stories have always crossed those boundaries.
So Bissula asks a simple question:
Is life real or imaginary?
Maybe the answer isn’t as important as what we do with the life we have.
